Dean Bowen, Home: Oil Paintings and Bronze Sculpture: Recently discovered in an old drawer in my childhood home was an early pre-kindergarten drawing l created around 1960. This almost frantic, expressionist drawing on old butcher's paper depicted an archetypal house with spiralling smoke below a just visible sun and scribbled sky, so characteristic of early childhood artworks. What a thrill and how joyously amusing it was to discover this lost remnant, this little treasure from the past!

Like an echo across time and through the eyes of an adult I revisit the theme of home in this exhibition of oil paintings and bronze sculpture. While commuting between home and the studio the passing spectacle of the city, neighbours’ homes, gardens, birds and everyday life became the themes and models for these works. Our homes embrace our lives both physically and psychologically, deepening our love of place and love for each other. The paintings of the nocturnal home under a vast sky of countless stars, along with a comets return to earth, reminds us of the enormity, yet fragility and preciousness of life and the universe. I hope that the artworks in this exhibition will evoke optimism and bring as much inquiry, joy, play and imagination as the work of that so very young artist did way back then. Dean Bowen July 2017

SYDNEY EXHIBITION, CURRAWONG , 18th AUGUST to 3rd SEPTEMBER, 2016

With a practice spanning over 25 years, Bowen has developed a distinctive and humorous symbolic language that thematically traverses urbanity and rurality, humanity and animality. Bowen’s new body of work, ‘Currawong’, continues his ongoing fascination with the conceptual currency of birds. In part inspired by Outsider Art and Naïve Art – and in recent times by the bird paintings of some of the Australia’s First Fleet Artists such as George Raper and the anonymous Sydney Bird Painter – Bowen’s anthropomorphised Magpies, Canarys and Currawongs explore the idiosyncratic interplay between mankind and the animal kingdom through a prism of humour and optimism. In doing so, the artist hints at relational intersections that exist between the monumental and the miniature, evincing the simple pleasures of human habitation within the urban and natural worlds. The exhibition also includes charming new sculptures and paintings rendering animals and ‘The House of Love’ in a glorious celebration of the vicissitudes of life.

20th ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION, GALERIE MIYAWAKI, KYOTO, JAPAN
28th November to 20th December 2015

This exhibition celebrates the twentieth anniversary since holding my first solo exhibition at the Galerie Miyawaki in 1995.That exhibition of mainly etchings was a precursor of what was to come as I developed themes, concepts and series of works evolving through a divergence of techniques such as lithography, oil painting, drawing, animation and bronze sculpture. In 1999 some of my first bird series pictures began as I was ironically inspired by the tic tack sound of birds running and dancing across my metal studio roof, “disturbing my concentration”. Over time the bird became a classic theme in my work alongside the iconography of other developing series such as urban and country life, comets and the starry night, animals and the human figure, childhood memories, the monumental and the miniature, all enhancing and reflecting each other through a prism of humour and optimism. This twentieth anniversary exhibition looks across the evolution of those themes as well as exhibiting new and recent works. Dean Bowen, Escalier en Spirale No. 102

The exhibition will include over sixty works. A four page illustrated publication, Escalier en Spirale No. 102 with an essay by Koh-ichi Tanikawa will accompany the exhibition.

Bronze Sculpture Commission

Bronze Sculpture Commission

Wyndham Vale Community Learning Centre, Wyndham City, July 2012

Dean Bowen was commissioned by Wyndham City to create a monumental bronze, "Cat", 80 X 306 X 105 cm for the new Wyndham Vale Community Learning Centre. Commissioned by the Public Art Advisory Group (PAAG) as part of the Per Cent for Art Scheme, which allocates 1% of spending on capital works to the development of public art.

"The cat has been an important and ongoing subject in my work for a number of years. As the Community Centre is surrounded by three schools, my aim was to make a sculpture that would engage and speak to one of the main uses of the building, the children. My humorous and oversized interpretation of the cat draws inspiration from ancient Egyptian art as well as childhood and adult memories of many amusing encounters with these thought provoking creatures".

This interactive eBook developed specifically for the iPad is richly illustrated with over forty photographs of the artist's critically acclaimed sculptural works, including recent bronze sculpture commissions, extensive exhibition and collection details as well as an essay by leading arts writer Louise Bellamy.

--

Citing major influences as the art of French painter, Jean Dubuffet, who embraced the art of children, the humour of Spanish sculptor, Joan Miro, and the stick-like figures of Swiss artist, Alberto Giacometti, Bowen is also drawn to the work of naive artists, untrained artists and the drawings of children.

Bowen's three-dimensional bronzes are fuelled by the influences of his childhood culminating in the creation of a contemporary world viewed through uniquely humorous, imaginative - and considered - eyes.
